Hundreds of volunteers get out of office work to dig in at Westminster High’s school farm and help feed people
WESTMINSTER — Over a two-day period, the Giving Farm at Westminster High that provides fresh vegetables and fruit to Orange County Food Bank got some tender, loving care from more than 300 volunteers out of the corporate world.
The helping hands that spruced up the farm on May 18 and 19 were culled from the Corporate Volunteer Council of Orange County, which is focusing its efforts this year on alleviating food insecurity.
The volunteers included representatives from such companies and organizations as PIMCO Foundation, Pacific Life, In-N-Out Burger, SCM Insurance Services and Ingram Micro Inc. Orange County Board of Supervisors Chairman Andrew Do, who represents the county’s First District, also pitched in.
The Giving Farm at Westminster High is the largest of the county’s remaining public school farms.
For about the past year, a good portion of the farm’s eight acres has been dedicated to helping increase the fresh produce available for people in need served by the Orange County Food Bank. The food bank is run by Community Action Partnership at a warehouse in Garden Grove and distributes food all over Orange County.
Westminster High students tend the farm under the guidance of agriculture instructor Dave Eusantos. Community involvement from individuals and volunteer groups is encouraged. Read more here >>>
