2024 Spirit of Volunteerism Honoree – John Kinney

Published: May 1, 2024

Honoree’s Name: John Kinney

Why This Volunteer is Extraordinary:

John Kinney first got involved with Pacific Marine Mammal Center in 2013. His journey with PMMC started when he took on a Board of Directors role. He has held many different positions on our Board of Directors, but currently serves as Governance Chair. John continuously looks for ways to advocate for PMMC. He has taken an active role in the education department. He is usually one of our first volunteers to sign up for outreach events and often spends time in our visitor yard, dreaming up ways we can enhance our guest experience. He was instrumental in getting the solar panels up, which control our sound boards that our young visitors love so much. Not only that, when they don’t work, he personally comes out to inspect and find a solution to the problem! He is an active member of our Release Team. In fact, he is usually one of the first on the beach to help set-up the pathway that will lead our patients to the big blue. In 2019, John created Swing for the Sea Lions, a golf tournament, benefitting PMMC. As you have probably guessed, in his free time he enjoys golfing, attending sporting events, and competing in agility classes with his dog, Star. He is passionate about serving in capacities that protect our environment and preserve wildlife.
