Youth Drug And Alcohol Deterrence (YDAD)

Involved in alternative sentencing options for more than 30 years, OneOC implemented Youth Drug And Alcohol Deterrence (YDAD) in 1986 with the help of concerned doctors, hospitals, law enforcement, and the courts. Over 45,000 participants have successfully completed this course. This model program has been showcased in television newscasts and replicated in many counties across the US.

Youth Drug And Alcohol Deterrence

Helps participants learn from the mistakes of others rather than making their own over and over again. YDAD offers participants unique insights into the effects of alcohol and drugs on their lives, and shows them the real-life consequences of their choices. The curriculum is comprised of 4 components, 3 classes; Drug and Alcohol Awareness, Sheriff Coroner Morgue presentation, a visit to a local hospital trauma unit at night and a 1,000 word essay. Classes are held year round every month.

The community has experienced a reduction in DUI accidents, arrests and re-arrests, fatalities and ER visits. Since its inception, YDAD has been instrumental in reducing the recidivism rate from over 35% down to 1.4%. Orange County has experienced a 21% drop in drivers ages 21 and up involved in drug and alcohol-related fatal and injury crashes and a 22% drop among drivers 15-20. YDAD saves lives.

Anyone can sign up and participate in YDAD without a court order; parent/guardian referrals and self-referrals are welcome.

Classes include:

Participants will be presented with hard hitting statistics and  hear stories from individuals whose lives were changed because of alcohol and drug use. They experience different levels of intoxication using simulation goggles.  They learn from peers about the legal, financial, and health effects of drugs and alcohol.  They learn how to create safe practices for the future.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff Coroner presents a series of recent accidents as a result of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, explains the physical effects of alcohol and drug use. The vivid examples of the short and long-term effects on the body are something that is rarely seen or talked about.

Participants meet at a local area hospital trauma unit.  In four hours, participants may see patients arrive who were involved in an alcohol and/or drug related incident, listen to experts from the trauma unit lecture on the physical and mental effects of alcohol and drug use as well as what they witness in their day to day jobs. Participants will see first hand how patients are treated with life saving procedures and tour various hospital patient rooms and departments.

What People Say about YDAD

I learned a lot from the YDAD program that I never learned even in rehab. Nothing at all is worth losing the life I love so dearly.  If it weren’t for the YDAD program I would not have made such a positive change in my life today.
