Honoree’s Name: Francie O’Brien

Award Category: Enrich

Why This Volunteer is Extraordinary:

Francie has demonstrated an extraordinary level of service as an Experience Corps OC reading club tutor. Due to the unprecedented circumstances of the past year and the need to pivot our tutoring model to a virtual platform, Francie was one of the first volunteer tutors to train and master on the video platform and assist in training other volunteers to use Zoom in order to deliver our 1:1 reading support to students with the same level of fidelity as was in person. Francie immediately volunteered to assist where needed as we made the pivot to a 1:1 virtual reading support model. Prior to joining our Parentis volunteer family in 2019, Francie volunteered with EC-Twin Cities for 3 years before moving to Orange County. With EC-Twin Cities Experience Corps, she volunteered about 12 hours per week, tutoring and assessing students in grades K-3 at a school in Minneapolis. “Being an Experience Corps tutor has been one of the most meaningful volunteer experiences I’ve had. The program itself has such a positive, measurable impact on the reading skills of the participating students, which sets them up for increased success throughout their lives. The mentoring relationships that I have built with my students have been personally meaningful to both the students and to me, as well. Lastly, I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet and befriend many accomplished and interesting adults who also volunteer with ECOC.” – Francie O’Brien, Parentis Foundation Volunteer.
