OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Field Club Elementary School got a little face-lift on Saturday thanks to a grant program sponsored by Pacific Life Insurance.
Over 70 volunteers from the company helped get things ready to go just in time for the new school year.
The new principal of the school, Colette Nero, was impressed.
“It’s pretty admirable that on a Saturday morning you’re up and ready to go after a long work wee, so they definitely have my respect and certainly my gratitude,” Nero said.
The volunteers got their hands dirty pulling weeds and planting fresh gardens around the building, as well as putting up murals in the fences around the playground.
Inside, other people were busy filling bags with school supplies to be placed in each student’s locker for their first day of school.
“I love to see that we can partner with a school that needs things like this so that our employees all volunteer their time and effort to come in and do these on weekend events or evening events, and that’s what I think makes it special,” said Angela Griesen, who was volunteering. The upgrades will be a fresh look this year that administrators hope will help students succeed.
“They’ve no joined the mission of the Omaha Public Schools. They’re here raising student achievement. We know that when students feel good about where they go to school, they feel connected, feel like this is the place for them and feel safe, that they do better in school,” Nero said.
The school also received a $20,000 imagination playground with pieces that can fit together multiple ways to challenge students’ creativity.
The first day of school is Aug. 15.
