Why This Volunteer is Extraordinary:
Dr. John Tracy is in his second year as a math tutor for trainees enrolled in Hope Builders’ construction training program. He began his career as a math and science teacher in Los Angeles, before becoming an engineer and launching a successful career at Boeing. John applies this experience to helping young adults, who are disconnected from the workforce and educational opportunities, improve their math skills and prepare for construction careers. Since the pandemic began, he has tutored full classes of Hope Builders’ trainees two times per week. Additionally, he has provided one-on-one virtual tutoring to anyone that needs additional support developing these skills. Driven by a desire to help young adults address the barriers that prevent them from entering the workforce, John established the Victoria Alegria Tracy Memorial Scholarship fund at Hope Builders to provide trainees with resources to further their careers after completing training. Hope Builders is truly grateful for John’s investment of time, resources, and talent towards the success of trainees in our programs.
Influenced at a young age by a teacher who would not let him fail, John helps Hope Builders’ trainees believe they can succeed. With his tutoring, young adults deficient in basic math at enrollment increased their skills by an average of two grades.
