Why This Volunteer is Extraordinary:
Our beloved veteran volunteer, Pat Alexander, truly encapsulates the Spirit of Volunteerism. For over 30 years (!) she has dedicated her time, energy, passion, and positivity to residents and staff alike at Casa Youth Shelter. Pat is someone that we know we can count on! Despite working full-time and her many other interests (belly dancing, equine therapy, outdoors, etc.), she has been unwavering in her commitment to Casa Youth Shelter and our mission to serve youth in need.
“She’s willing to do anything to help out Casa Youth Shelter!”
This sentiment was expressed again and again by the CYS family when asked about Pat. In many ways she is another member of the staff. Whether on a Friday evening helping supervise residents, managing the House on a Saturday so staff could attend trainings, leading recreational outings with residents, or helping the administrative staff on countless projects, Pat has done it all. And always with a smile! When the world seemed to fall apart during the pandemic, Pat filled in and saved many a day when we found ourselves short staffed or dealing with the unexpected.
“Pat is an amazing athlete and believes in movement!”
If you’ve ever spent time with Pat, then you have been on one of her epic walks. Her weekly walks to the park with residents would go for miles and upon return, they would be tired and ready for bed – in the middle of the afternoon! They love it and always look forward to their time with Pat. She started a weekly workout for staff to meet at the park and encouraged us to move. Not only for the exercise, but as an opportunity to bond with each other outside of the House.
“Pat is a unique soul who is all about giving back.”
Pat always comes to the House with a smile on her face, ready to have fun and help however she can. Her “sure I can do that, whatever you need” attitude is a genuine reflection of how much she cares for the mission at Casa Youth Shelter and the young adults that we serve. She is open and giving, thoughtful and understanding, and joyful! Her energy fills the House whenever she is here.
It is undoubtedly because of people like Pat Alexander that Casa Youth Shelter is able to do the work that we do every day. She is a model volunteer and her dedication and heart is exemplary to us all. Casa Youth Shelter is honored to nominate her for the Spirit of Volunteerism award and recognize that she is truly one in a million!
